Building Gaming Communities: My Experience with Goated Geese
Goated Geese started at the end of 2025 and now has around 350 people. Here is why it began, what it is like to run and what I am building for it.
Goated Geese is an 18+ Aussie and Kiwi gaming community. It started at the end of 2025 as a replacement for a community we were in that was not suiting us, and it now has around 350 people and is still growing.
Why it started
The community we were part of no longer worked for us. Rather than put up with it, we built our own. The result is a social-first place built around multiplayer games and online friendships.
What 18+ means here
Everyone marks that they are over 18 before they can talk. The reason is simple. It lets people banter freely without worrying about Australian regulations.
What a week looks like
The main fixture is a weekly game night on Saturdays. Things have been quiet for a while, and the plan is to bring it back.
The games
I host servers for the community, including Palworld, Project Zomboid, Enshrouded, Minecraft, Valheim and Eco. They run through Pelican Panel and Pelican Wings. I covered that setup in my Proxmox post.
The technical side
Beyond game servers, I am building a community website and a set of Discord bots. The site is built with Next.js and covers a roster, a games hub, events and a way to apply to join, with Discord sign-in. Staff get an admin area. The bots handle jobs inside Discord. I describe the site in more detail on the community site project page.
What has been hard
Growing at a steady pace is hard. The release of WARDOGS helped us grow for a while.
Join us
If you are over 18 and like multiplayer games, you can join us on Discord.
