My Favourite Self-Hosted Applications

The self-hosted apps I use most, from n8n and FileFlows to PriceBuddy and changedetection.io, and what I use each one for.

I run a lot of containers on my Unraid server. These are the ones I would miss most, and what I use each for.

Automation and media

n8n is where my complex automations live. When a job needs several services talking to each other, this is where I build it.

FileFlows compresses and transcodes media. Smaller files mean more room on the array.

Plex streams my media.

Watching things for me

PriceBuddy tracks the price of things I want to buy, so I can catch a good sale, discount or clearance.

changedetection.io tracks changes to web pages and prices visually.

DomainLocker keeps an eye on my domains.

Tools and utilities

IT-Tools is a collection of small developer and IT utilities. I use it for work and for troubleshooting at home.

AutoVPN sets up temporary VPN connections in locations around the world, on different cloud providers.

TREK is a travel planner. I use it to plan trips overseas.

Hardware and making

Bambuddy controls my 3D printers and tracks my filament.

Connecting it all

Cloudflare Tunnel connects certain apps to the public internet without opening ports. I wrote a separate guide on using Cloudflare Tunnels.

Game hosting

Pelican Panel and Pelican Wings run the game servers for my community. They are set up on a VPS and a Proxmox VM rather than on the Unraid server, which I describe in my Proxmox post.

What I have learned

My list changes constantly. I try something, keep it if it earns a place, and remove it if it does not. Containers make that easy.

What I store and why

I store your email address, whether and when you confirmed it, and which list it is on. Nothing else.

I do not store your IP address or browser details, and I do not track opens or clicks.

The list lives in a database in Canada and is backed up in Canada. Tom Staggard sends it.

Every email has an unsubscribe link that works in one click. Signups that are never confirmed are deleted after 7 days.
